Help
kids cope with domestic violence
A technique called emotion
coaching can help parents help children surmount the effects
of family violence, says a University of Washington study.
It found that when mothers in families where there is domestic
violence use emotion coaching, their children are less aggressive,
withdrawn and depressed. The role of fathers as emotion coaches
was less clear.

Teaching
kids about safety
With the heart-stopping worry of the baby and toddler years
over, parents face new responsibilities for keeping their
kids safe. You can't keep children wrapped in cotton wool
forever, so it's important to teach them vital safety information.

Balancing
that backpack
Backpacks are a convenient way to lug textbooks and school supplies
around. However, while they are generally considered a good
way to carry large loads because they distribute the weight
evenly across some of the body's largest muscles, some kids
carry far too much weight on their young backs. That, experts
say, puts them at risk for muscle and joint injury.

Nutrition
during pregnancy
Congratulations!
You're pregnant! This is a thrilling and unique time,
when what you eat not only has an affect on your health,
but also on the development and wellbeing of your unborn
baby. The complex processes that occur during pregnancy
require a rich supply of protein, vitamins and minerals
for both mother and child. If you've built up good stores
of nutrients in the months and years before conception
through a healthy, balanced diet, the added demands
of pregnancy can be met with modest adjustments.

Fighting
the Pregnancy Blahs
Most pregnant women
experience the pregnancy blahs. I can remember feeling
so big and unattractive throughout my two pregnancies,
and secretly wishing for the pregnancy to be over so
that I could have my body back and fit into my normal
clothes. It's sad to say, really, because pregnancy
is such a beautiful experience and the fact that you
created this little human being that is developing in
your body should make you feel wonderful through every
step of the way.

Are
you taking the right trip this holiday?
Larry and Corrina
Johnson took their children on a trip this summer. No,
they didn't visit Mt. Rushmore or the Grand Canyon.
Fenway Park, the Field Museum, and the Mackinaw Bridge
weren't part of the itinerary either. In fact, the Johnson
family never left home. The trip their children experienced
was delivered at the kitchen table. They received a
full blown, all expenses paid, guilt trip delivered
by Larry Johnson and lovingly supported by his wife,
Corinna.

Making
Time for Yourself
Women: Caretakers of the world, take 1985. A TV commercial
came out about a decade ago portraying a day in the
life of modern woman. The camera followed a frazzled
woman as she scurried here and there with everybody
from her boss to her children demanding her time and
yapping at her heels. Finally she paused for one breathless
moment, just long enough for the camera to zoom in on
her and the product she was holding in her hand.
